Ho Yeow Sun Opens 4th School in Henan, China

International pop star Ho Yeow Sun (also known as Sun Ho) is active in her profession as both recording artist and humanitarian.

Even after gaining significant success in both the Asian and western music scene, the philanthropist at heart has recently extended her charitable causes into China.

Over the past few years, the signer has been channeling her album royalties into building schools in various outskirts of the country.

For someone who believes in the importance of education, especially for the younger generation, Sun's aim of contributing to the ongoing education in China remains clear and focused.

To date, she has built four schools in China: Chong Qing, Gui Zhou, Liao Ning (where she also sponsored a computer lab) and Henan.

Hence, the authorities in Liu Dian proposed to improve the current conditions of the school which prompted the signer to do something for the people in that village.

With careful planning and close collaboration with the relevant authorities, Sun's altruistic efforts paid off in October at the official opening ceremony, six months after construction began in April this year.

Among the list of luminaries who graced the event where Hu Guang Kun (China Communist Party Luoyang Municipal Party Committee member), Zong Ting Xuan (Vice-Chairman of Luoyang Political Consultative Committed).

Wang Zi Wen (Mayor of Ruyang Municipal People's Government), Tong Yu Peng (Deputy Mayor of Ruyang Municipality Political Consultative Committee) and other officials from Ru Yang Country and Liu Dian Rural Administrative Division.

The new building covers a total gross area of 1,530sqm. It boasts 16 classrooms over three levels which can accommodate up to 800 students, thus being able to increase its yearly intake from now on.

With the school's expanded facilities, the move will benefit some 900 families in the village.

On top of the additional classrooms, the construction project also includes the purchase of teaching facilities such as library resources and multimedia teaching equipment.

An Olympic Objective

The 2008 Beijing Olympics selects its music ambassador from Singapore—singer Ho Yeow Sun.
Singapore (13 June 2007)—When the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIV Olympiad was searching for a music ambassador for the 2008 games, the candidate had to meet three criteria. According to The Straits Times Life! section, the person had to be an ethnic Chinese, be a star with a healthy image, and someone who has worked in the international music scene. By meeting all the requirements, Sun was officially named as the sole music ambassador on 11 June 2007. “It was very sudden,” the singer said and was surprised to be approached by the committee for the position.

Part of her role as ambassador will mean visits to several universities in Beijing and Shanghai. She plans to begin this tour circuit in August where she will perform and talk to the students about songwriting, and in the process, allow the students to have a feel of international music based on her current singing background in Mandarin and English. She will assist them in making their songwriting more presentable so that “it will be selected for performance at the Olympics.” The report also said that although the committee will bear the costs of her travel and stay, she will not be paid for the role itself. The singer added that she would be “paid” with the love from the students she will be visiting.

The various songs for the Olympics, including the theme song, will be chosen 100 days before the opening ceremony on August 8, 2008. Song entries will also be open for submission from professional songwriters and singers. Sun also said that she will be collaborating with her current American producer, Wyclef Jean, and famed songwriter, Diane Warren, to write a theme song to be considered for the Olympics.
